- Brief intro to Cairns & surrounds -- Cairns from what I've heard has changed a lot since I last was there (1996), but I think if you have time you should hire a car and visit places around the area - also if you have a car you could stay at one of the beaches, bare in mind that in Carins itself does not have a beach, so most people who want to swim go out to the "beaches"
Clifton Beach or Palm Cove just to name a couple, also at that time of year (Xmas) if you choose a beach to stay at make sure it has a "stinger net" or you will not be advised to go swimming - last I was there these 2 beaches did have "nets" Port Douglas (about 90km north) is also worth a visit or a stay but it was expensive then Kuranda (village on the Atherton Tablelands) is good for a day, weekends are the best (market days) but you dont need a car best if you dont, as the best way is either by the "Skyrail" over the rainforest and back by the "Kuranda Rail" and old working steam train - dont take the tourist package but just do the Skyrail & Train And of course there's the reef, this is a whole day out and I think is worth to do - chose a boat that goes to the "outer reef" as this is less spoilt and the diving/snookling is better As for eating "you cant go pass 'Charlie's' on the esplanade for the best seafood and hot food buffet best value for money. The also have discount vouchers in the Cairns Post each day. -- trax2 Oz - 02:03:34 09/24/04 - travel@trax2.com

- The Pacific Highway or Hwy No 1 -- It is possible to drive from Melbourne to Sydney (or Syd-Mel) in one day, but if you do you will miss out on stopping at places like 90 Mile Beach (Lakes Entrance), Mallacoota, Eden, Batesman Bay to name a few. Do yourself a favour and take it easy. -- bill -- -- 05:52:51 11/13/02
