- Re: tai Qi workshops in Yangshuo -- Hi Karen, here's a TIP - Once U are in YangShuo get up early and go into YangShuo Park, look around and you should see many people practicing - some old some young, in groups & solo - spot some one U like then just go up and ask to join in - You'll be surprised. If you need maps look here for Beijing Map, Shanghai Map, Tibet Map, Xian Map, Yangshuo Map, Guilin Map, Dali Map or Lijiang Map -- Bill - 08:52:00 04/29/07 - travel@trax2.com

another memorable trip with Bill & Tian Jing -- Three years after my first trip with Tian Jing & Bill in Guilin & Yangshuo, I was back for more of China. Our destination this time was Yunnan: Lijiang/Zhongdian/Dali/Kunming. When travelling with Bill and TJ, there are no factory tours, exorbitant entrance fees, or daily servings of sweet & sour pork. Instead, they plan their services according to your needs and interests. Our trip in Yunnan was months and several dozens of emails in the planning. Early on, TJ presented several possible itineraries and we worked through each of them over the following months. As departure time drew near, Bill provided practical travel advice about air tickets, cell phones, and anything that would make our time in China more safe, interesting, and easier. His large-print Chinese scripted addresses and directions definitely looked after us during our unaccompanied moments, before we met up with them in Lijiang. TJ was always ready to accommodate our idiosyncracies and whims (since we're both 50+, we had lots of both). If, for example, 30 minutes into OptionA we wanted to switch to OptionB, that was no problem: within 15 minutes we had another driver, we were out of the ancient little village and off to the Buddhist Grottoes in the next village. TJ hired drivers to take us along the less-traversed routes to out-of-the-way sights. Thanks to her delightful personality, we were invited into private homes and farms. Most memorable was our Tibetan driver's home, replete with shrines to various lamas and walls of intricate wood carving. We dined with the local population, at markets, food stalls, or small village restaurants. TJ introduced us to regional specialties, such as "ear" noodles and "lentil paste". She was very understanding when we gave the "furry tofu" a pass. Meals with TJ were always tasty. Accommodations included authentic inns, hostels, and hotels. All provided in-room western toilets, shower facilities, warm & clean linens, and abundant hot water. China is charging forth, with satellite dishes, highways, SUVs, computers, pollution, etc. Yet, the time before all that still exists. As we drove south from the 'frontier' town of Zhongdian/Shangri-la towards DaLi, I thought we had slipped into a National Geographic documentary. All around us, families were working the fields by hand, either cutting the rice with sickles, beating the bundles into huge baskets, or turning the ground over for the next planting. We were back in time, driving through the autumn rice harvest. Once again, Tian Jing and Bill took me to the real China, the people and their lives. There is still more of China I want to see. I just hope Bill & Tian Jing will be there too. -- Patricia Young - 01:40:37 01/11/07 - pywwong@shaw.ca
