    - DO YOUR OWN THING!!!! Remember this is China where everything is changing quicker than ever. -- bill -- bill@trax2.com
    • "Chinese Only Hotels" -- I've been travelling in this country for near 12 months now and have only been asked to leave an hotel only once for been an overseas chinese - meaning it pays to shop around and bargain because once that hotel/guesthouse gets its name in print into the "guide books" its prices goes up and standards goes down - this does not only happen in China but everywhere else in the world. And I dont know about you, but I like a bit of cleanliness and friendliness that does not cost the earth. -- bill -- -- 11:24:38 05/25/02
      • Re: "Chinese Only Hotels" -- could be the "things of the past" in the not to distance future - has disappeared in places like Yanhshou and most tourist places already!! -- bill -- -- 11:30:22 05/25/02
    • COMPARE: -- Jinghong:
Many hotels along Nth & Sth Jinghong Lu are asking Y30-60 for double with own bath - we chose the "Library Guesthouse" on the corner of Nth Jonghong and Nth Mingzu Lu for Y40 with bath/aircon campared to the recommended "Dai Building Hotel" for Y50 double for a small dark room with one small fan plus mosquito net and dirty share bath.

      • Price wars -- Jinghong:
This could because of the time of the year (MAY) but in any time it pays to ask - or shop - around and do a little bargaining - NEVER BELIEVE ANYTHING U READ!!!

    • COMPARE: -- Kunming:
Many bargain hotels in the block around the Main Long Distance Bus Station (MLDBS), " New Canton Kong Hotel" Y60 with bath (on the road behind the MLDBS - one we stayed in) or "Three Leaves Hotel" Y60 for double with bath compared to the Camellia Hotel for Y100 - the last 2 are recommended in guide book

Nanning to Kunming (Y55) 2005 departs 3:48pm arrives around 7am next day - upgrade (Y80-100)

  • May Day Holiday's -- 02:49:38 05/09/02
Is another bad time to do any travel in China - it's 7 days of National holidays and unlike Chinese New Year where everyone travels back home to spend time with family - May is spent going out to visit all the well known/famous tourist desinations in China. -- bill -- bill@trax2.com
    • Is from the 1 May to 7 May -- Avoid these dates or else find a small village to relax in. Also most room rates go up by 25-60%

      • Re: FREE BUS -- BEWARE: It's now the latest hang-out for PICK-POCKETS. If you can get on with all the crush of all the crowds then keep an eye your things in your pockets. Lots of locals have already lost their cell phones. -- bill -- -- 09:43:32 05/10/02
      • Re: FREE BUS -- No there is no excuse - but you need to fight to get on the bus. The service began during the May holidays, which for Guilin is the busiest time of the year - with many, many locals just riding for fun. -- bill -- -- 05:22:43 05/06/02
