  • In 2 weeks (14-29 April02) on Hainan Island -- 01:05:01 05/04/02
We visited 9 cities/towns passing through numerous small villages, starting from Haikuo to Wenchang, Qionghai, Wanlin, Qiongzhong, Wuzhishan (name changed from Tongshi to Wuzhishan last year), Sanya, Monkey Island and Ledong (SEE MAP). With most places very topically china in feel. But for me the most interesting place was around Monkey Island and best of all was trying all the different types of mangos. Getting around is no problem at all on buses and starting in 2003 a new passenger rail service to Sanya, english is also widely posted on all roads. All up we did not meet many foreign tourists but lots of chinese tourists which go to visit Tianya billed by the chinese as “The End of the Earth” - the southern most tip of China. -- bill -- bill@trax2.com

  • SHIPS TO HAIKOU -- 01:02:31 05/04/02
There are 2 shipping lines that you can catch to Haikou, the best and cheapest one is called Haikou Harbour Shipping Co (Xiuying Harbour) tel: (0898) 678 4590. Be aware that both depart from different ports in Haikou City - most buses heading west on Binhai Dadao Rd will go past the harbour. They have ships going to Baihai (Y48-118), Haian (Y28), Zhanjiang (Y50-130), Shenzhen (Y220-470), and Guangzhou (Y120-400) -- bill -- bill@trax2.com
  • Haikuo to Sanya by bus -- bill@trax2.com
The offical bus price from Haikuo to Sanya is Y78 (express) or Y49 (local), but if you wait at the local bus stand just outside of the Long Distance Bus Station mini buses can take you there from Y20-30 pp - bargain hard - click on the link below to see map.
Also in the bus station buy the latest english/chinese map of Hainan Island.

  • TIP --
Tea houses are every where in Hainan Island, the favourite is "hong cha" - red tea (Yellow Label Lipton) - not forget to tell them not to add sugar, then the tea is free but if you want to try something more interesting try the local "ba bao cha" - 8 treasure tea - in Qiongzhong Y2.5 for cup or by the pot Y10
    See maps!!!

  • Adoptation -- bill -- Adopting children is relatively easy in China - especially in the country areas where there is still a high preference for little boys and girls are "discarded" - the term "pick-up" is often heard where anyone who wants to adopt can just "pick-up" one of the unwanted girls take it to the local PSB (police) office and have the baby's name changed to yours and registered into their family ID Book. Every family member has to be registered by the police into this book, making them a legal citizen. 3 month old
