*** VISAS
China visa's

HONG KONG is the best place to get your visa's Check out our list of agents and prices ...
Laos visa's
Are available in KunMing cost RMB130 to 400 depends on your nationality - takes 3 working days - from Camellia Hotel.
Vietnam visa's
Are easy to get in Laos, from Vientiane, Savannakhet and Pakse, if you ask for a 14 day one they will issue it on the same day. A 30 day takes 3-5 days. Cost is USD50
Also available now from CITS YangShou RMB500-800.

TIPS
As for luggage I recommend some sort of backpack if you intend to visit remote regions. Believe me, dragging and carrying a suitcase on your shoulders for 4-6 hours is not a comfortable sight (as testified by picture above).
Since Sept 11, no knives (no matter how small), nail files or cutting instruments of any kind are allowed on carryon luggage. These items must be placed in checked luggage.
A good "thumb of rule" is to pack whatever you plan to take then put half of it back. (Most people tend to take far more clothing than is really necessary).
